  4.     DIED. Charles Garry, 82, pugnacious attorney best known for
  5. representing Black Panthers and antiwar protesters in the
  6. 1960s; in Berkeley. In 1967 Garry emerged as one of the nation's
  7. top radical lawyers when he took the case of Huey P. Newton, a
  8. founder of the Black Panthers. Newton had been charged with
  9. murdering a police officer in a shoot-out in Oakland, but was
  10. convicted of voluntary manslaughter. In 1978 Garry, who was
  11. legal counsel to the Rev. Jim Jones of the California-based
  12. People's Temple, escaped through the jungle before the mass
  13. murder and suicide took place at Jonestown, Guyana.
