- DIED. Charles Garry, 82, pugnacious attorney best known for
- representing Black Panthers and antiwar protesters in the
- 1960s; in Berkeley. In 1967 Garry emerged as one of the nation's
- top radical lawyers when he took the case of Huey P. Newton, a
- founder of the Black Panthers. Newton had been charged with
- murdering a police officer in a shoot-out in Oakland, but was
- convicted of voluntary manslaughter. In 1978 Garry, who was
- legal counsel to the Rev. Jim Jones of the California-based
- People's Temple, escaped through the jungle before the mass
- murder and suicide took place at Jonestown, Guyana.
